A Newcastle pub with a special place in the city’s history – for more than 150 years, The Market Lane, known as the Monkey bar has been a key fixture in the city’s nightlife.
Traced back to around 1850, when it was originally called the Old Market Lane Hotel, the pub was a popular watering venue for the Irish bricklayers who helped build much of Victorian Newcastle. Legend has it that they used to leave their hods, or monkeys, in the passageway as security against their bar bill – giving the venue the nickname it still bears today.
Nowadays, drinkers can enjoy daily drinks offers, real ales, craft ales, premium spirits, a pool table and free Jukebox in a relaxed and comfortable environment.
The indoor and outdoor areas are an oasis for local residents and people travelling into the area. And with a children’s play area, your little ones can enjoy the fresh air while you do too!
The Sandpiper offers an extensive food menu, including a delicious Sunday carvery which is all freshly cooked by an in-house team of chefs. To complement the food menu, they also offer a large selection of real ales, Italian coffees, loose leaf teas, and snacks.
The quirky yet modern interior offers an atmosphere for any age range – whether you want to read a book or celebrate with friends and family.
